A common Western image of life in a third world country is of a woman wearing her baby in a piece of cloth, going about her work. Happily, that image is being seen in Canada more and more frequently, as Canadian women discover what women have known throughout history: life with a baby is pretty easy when the baby is being carried!
Babywearing (carrying your baby on your body) is becoming more and more popular, for many reasons. Babies who are carried cry less. Breastfeeding & elimination communication are both facilitated by babywearing. Mothers can easily care for other children, do housework, exercise and work in or out of the home when they are babywearing. Additionally, babies in carriers are welcome in numerous places where strollers are not - a recent children’s exhibit at the Royal Alberta Museum banned strollers during busy times and many stores and restaurants do not allow strollers inside.
We have a great resource in Edmonton for babywearing parents, a Babywearing group. This group is hosted by Arie, an accredited babywearing educator and LLL leader. Meetings are free and there are carriers available so parents have a chance to try out different styles before they buy or make their own.
The Edmonton Babywearing Group meets each month - at the Clansmen Rugby Club, 11060 111 Ave, it is usually in the evening on the last Sunday of the month.
The first hour (from 6-7pm) is for experienced babywearers who have been coming to meetings for awhile who want to show off new carriers, talk collecting, or try out advanced carries. Our regular meeting is for everyone and runs from 7-9pm. It covers basic information about safety, different types of carries and lots of time to practice and get help with your own carriers.
Please email us at info@tadpoles.ca if there is a specific carrier you'd like to try out.
